PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet rich plasma therapy is a type of rejuvenation that can be used for both the face and hair. In PRP therapy, a patient's own blood is used to create brand new cellular growth. Once the blood is drawn, it's exposed to centrifugal force in a sterile and temperature controlled capsule.

That process allows for the extraction of a platelet-rich in plasma that contains three to five times more platelets than the blood on its own. This plasma also has greatly increased growth factors and a number of powerful proteins that help cells to repair themselves. New Life Wellness and Medical Spa then injects the plasma back into the treatment area -- typically either the face or the scalp -- through micro-needling.

How does PRP therapy feel?

PRP therapy is delivered through micro-fine (insulin sized) needles, so it's not painful for most patients. Patients may experience a mild prickling feeling on the skin or the scalp, depending on the treatment area. For highly sensitive patients, New Life Wellness and Medical Spa can apply a local anesthetic to the face or scalp prior to the treatment. There is no downtime required after the treatment. Depending on the number of injections and the size of the area being treated, expect the procedure to take about an hour.

How does PRP therapy cause rejuvenation?

PRP therapy brings about a gradual improvement. In the weeks and months following the treatment, brand new cells will develop. In the face, this causes collagen growth. This helps smooth lines and wrinkles and can even fill in deeper facial folds. In the hair, the growth factors in the plasma cause natural new hair growth in areas where the hair follicles are dormant.

How many PRP treatments are needed?

It depends on the individual patient and on their degree of skin concerns or hair loss. For most patients, about three total treatments allow for a noticeable and impressive improvement. The treatments are generally scheduled a month to eight weeks apart for optimal results. While several treatments usually yield the best results, most patients notice an improvement in the skin or the hair after the first therapy session.
